Namesake
Ren Earlin Tobler was born in Bunkerville, Nevada, on June 14, 1909. He graduated from Virgin Valley High School in 1929, where he was student body president and valedictorian of his class.
He began his career in 1932 at Mesquite Elementary School. In 1937, he was named head coach of sports at Virgin Valley High School. While there, his teams took the state championship in football and beat Las Vegas High in the Southern Nevada Basketball Tournament.
He moved to Las Vegas in 1943 to teach at John S. Park Elementary. In 1945 and ‘46, while teaching at Fifth Street School, he also helped D.D. Keller coached the basketball team at Las Vegas High School. They won the first State Basketball Championship for L.V.H.S. in 1946.
Rancho High School named Mr. Tobler the head track coach in 1959. He also taught health and coached junior varsity basketball.
His interest in sports led him to pursue a master’s degree in athletic training. In 1963, after spending three summers in Indiana, he graduated with honors.
Mr. Tobler retired from the Clark County School District in 1967 with 35 years of service. However, his close association with sports did not end there. He served as a part-time athletic trainer at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas for the next six years.
Mr. Tobler's 41 years of distinguished service to education were all spent in Clark County. Thousands of young men and women were recipients of that service.
Mr. Tobler died May 20, 1974. His family continues to live in Las Vegas.
